Plot Summary:
A book “The One and only Ivan” is based on the true story
about a real gorilla named Ivan. Ivan spent almost 30 years without seeing
another of his kind. The author Katherine Applegate, inspired by the story,
creates her work of fiction.
Ivan lives and “works” as an exhibit animal in the mall. He
has several friends: Stella, the elderly elephant, Bob, the stray dog, and
Julia, the daughter of the mall janitor. His life seems smooth and comfortable.
Every day Ivan gets his share of food thrown into the cage. The arrival of a
baby elephant Ruby, who has an unbreakable spirit, awakens Ivan’s memories about
his own childhood in the jungle. But it is the death of Stella, who spent all
her life captured in the cage, that completely changes Ivan’s outlook. He turns
his everyday hobby - drawing - into a very important mission: to save Ruby. His
work of art is a call for help to find a real home for Ruby. The ape’s
paintings, with Julie’s help, draw attention of local media and the animal
protection agency. Ruby and Ivan finally relocate to the zoo. Ivan is afraid of
the change, but is happy when he discovers his friend is safe and happy. Ivan fulfilled
his mission.
Critical Analysis:
The story is told in the first person point of view. The
main character, Ivan, is a narrator. Ivan tells his story in a free verse. His
thoughts are simple, but clear and intelligent. Ivan has been separated from
his own kind and struggles to understand who and what he is. A strong
relationship emerges between the reader and the main character. The reader is
rooting for Ivan through the novel and happy when Ivan finds happiness.
The author Katherine Applegate uses short sentences and
simple language. Nevertheless, the text is full of deep wisdom: “Memories are
precious. They tell us who we are.” Though the book is not supported by many
illustrations, the author’s flow of verses creates vivid pictures in our minds.
It is a book for everyone. Both adults and children can
enjoy a story about Ivan and his world.
